Why Project Drishti?

India is home to 4.95 million blind people and 70 million vision impaired people and Project Drishti is dedicated to them

Nearly half of these cases of blindness could have been prevented with timely treatment. However, poverty, which is both a cause and a consequence of blindness, creates a challenging cycle that is particularly difficult to break, especially with the underpreveliged community.

Advancing Eye Health in India

By preventing avoidable blindness, we enhance access to education, employment, and prosperity, enabling fuller participation in civil and social life. Here are some of the eye conditions we address to promote eye health and restore vision.

A cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye, which is crucial for focusing light and producing sharp, clear images. It is the primary cause of blindness in India. The lens is primarily composed of water and protein. As time passes, this protein can accumulate and cloud the lens, obstructing light passage and causing blurred or fuzzy vision. Cataracts are commonly a natural part of aging.

Cataracts typically develop simultaneously in both eyes. Symptoms vary but generally include gradually worsening vision clarity, halos around lights, glare, and double vision. The most severe cataracts can make the iris appear almost completely clouded, leading to total vision loss. While cataracts cannot be prevented, they are relatively simple to treat. Cataract surgery is a brief procedure, often completed in about 20 minutes.
